Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST3 Specialty Training Application Form
These are the specialty specific questions used on Oriel for applications to Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST3.
The questions are presented here to help you prepare for your future applications. Please be aware application form structures, questions, word counts, etc. can change and there is no guarantee that future application forms will remain the same.
Have you passed MRCOG Part 1. NB. If you have not already passed MRCOG Part 1 you must provide evidence of a confirmed booking for the January 2026 exam sitting. Please upload this via the document upload option below. (Yes | No)
Please confirm the date that you passed MRCOG Part 1
If you have not yet passed MRCOG Part 1 you must upload evidence of a booking for the January 2026 exam sitting. There will be no further opportunity to sit the exam after this sitting prior to Offers being made.
Have you passed MRCOG Part 2? (Yes | No)
Please note that you do not need MRCOG Part 2 in order to be eligible to apply for ST3 Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
If you have indicated above that you have passed MRCOG Part 2, please confirm the date you passed this
Below are the self-assessment questions you are required to complete, including possible responses to each question, that will form part of your overall application. Your responses to these self-assessment questions will determine your own self-score. You will be required to provide evidence to substantiate your responses AFTER you have submitted an application, in line with the timeline below. NB. You are NOT required to submit any evidence relating to Self-Assessment during the Oriel application process. Requested evidence will need to be uploaded via our new Self-Assessment portal in Qpercom Recruit and NOT via Oriel. This evidence will subsequently be validated by a panel and used to derive your final validated score.
The recruitment office is not able to advise you about which response you should select for any question. You must select the response you feel you will be able to justify to the panel, using the evidence you provide.
NB. Only applicants scoring above the published minimum scoring threshold will be invited to upload evidence for review. Those scoring below the minimum threshold score will be longlisted out of the process and will not have an opportunity to upload supporting evidence.
If it is discovered that any response is false or misleading (including incidences of deliberate over-scoring in order to achieve the minimum scoring requirement), evidence will be collected, and you may be referred to a Probity Panel. This may result in escalation to the respective governing body, e.g. GMC.
We reserve the right to use anti-plagiarism software.
Please refer to guidance attached to the vacancy and published on our web site (link in vacancy) when completing your application to ensure that you are able to supply the necessary evidence to support your chosen scoring option in each Domain.
*All time periods stated refer to Whole/Full Time Equivalent (WTE) of employment (excluding any periods of statutory leave).
For information purposes:
Applicants that are successful in the longlisting stage will be requested to upload supporting evidence to the Self-Assessment portal between 10am UK time on Tuesday 6th January 2026 and 10am UK time on Tuesday 20th January 2026. Please refer to the relevant section of the applicant guidance for details of the evidence required.
Further guidance regarding evidence requirements will be issued when applicants are invited to upload their evidence but you should prepare your supporting evidence to meet the following requirements:
- A separate PDF file is required for each of the Self-Assessment questions.
- All relevant evidence should be uploaded per Domain question noting that no evidence may be used for multiple Domains.
- Ensure evidence is not password protected as you will have no further opportunity to provide evidence outside of the upload window and outside of the portal.
- The panel will only be able to assess the evidence you provide via the portal; they will not contact you to request additional evidence. You are therefore requested to provide all evidence in a clear format so that this can easily be identified and assessed.
- Please note that no evidence can be submitted retrospectively.
- Evidence should not contain patient identifiable data.
- Any lack of evidence, or lack of clarity provided by applicants will lead to an amendment of the score. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide clear and unambiguous evidence for the process.
- It will be your responsibility to provide evidence via employment history uploaded to the evidence portal (not Oriel) to allow verifiers to establish where evidence is time period specific. Failure to supply clarity in this regard will result in an applied time period based on a Full Time working pattern up to the date of application opening. You may use the employment history template document provided in the application form ‘attached documents’ for this purpose. NB. Your employment history in Oriel will not self-populate this, you must complete it yourself and upload it to the evidence portal together with all your supporting Domain evidence when requested.
At the time of application opening (20 November 2025), do you have any university awarded qualifications other than an undergraduate medical degree?
Please do not score the same qualification in more than one domain. NB. Please refer to the Research domain question for PhD qualifications.
- Masters qualification in relevant field e.g. Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Leadership, Management, Ultrasound, Genetics : 5
- Postgraduate diploma in relevant field e.g. Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Leadership, Management, Ultrasound, Genetics : 4
- UK primary postgraduate qualification e.g. MRCP Part 1, MCEM A (excluding MRCOG), Ultrasound : 3
- Postgraduate certificate in relevant field e.g. Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Leadership, Management, Ultrasound : 3
- Diplomate of National Board or equivalent and/or none of the above : 0
Evidence that will be required:
- Evidence for this Domain has no specified time period but must not be dated after the 20 November 2025.
- Please provide your degree certificate. NB. Only fully completed qualifications with certificate or official letter of proof of outcome will be counted.
- The definition of ‘Masters’ used here represents a period of training in a nationally recognised university-associated institution separate to standard undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes. A mandatory element of achieving a \‘Masters\’ will be the submission of an essay or dissertation, deemed of sufficient quality and content by external assessors and/or an examination process. A Masters would be expected to cover a specific area of learning for example leadership, management, education or an allied field of medicine not covered in detail by standard medical student or postgraduate curricula. NB. Masters in Education may only be claimed under Domain 4 - Teaching.
- For the above reason Non-UK Masters qualifications in O&G cannot generally be counted. The rationale for this decision is that they represent a period of training in a non-UK training hospital associated with a submission of an essay or audit, the equivalent of which would not count as a Masters in the UK and as such this would unfairly advantage those trainees who have used this to score marks in this category. However, we do acknowledge that there are Masters qualifications that would count and that these should evidence a period of learning in a recognised institution, with an assessment by external assessors of a dissertation and or examination process. It would be expected to cover a specific area of learning for example leadership, management or education, as detailed and explained in the definition provided in the above point – please ensure any claim made meets the requirements of this definition and that you are able to sufficiently evidence this.
- Further specific common examples, for purposes of clarity, are Masters in O&G from Egypt or India, which are qualifications at the level of MRCOG Parts 2 & 3 and are therefore also not equivalent to a UK Masters in a specialist subject and so cannot be counted. This may not be limited to the countries mentioned.
- MRCPi is no longer accepted under Postgraduate qualifications.
- Please ensure that any qualification claimed for is university awarded or awarded by an organization affiliated with a university. Any awards and/or certificates for non-university courses, etc, will not be eligible to score and will be rejected, e.g. paid for courses run by external organisations.
- University awarded qualifications should be of a significant depth and duration to qualify, i.e. short 1-2 day and/or week courses will not count.
At the time of application opening (20 November 2025), how many complete quality improvement projects (QIP) have you undertaken in the last 36 months (WTE)* of employment (excluding any periods of statutory leave)? Evidence for no more than a total 2 QIP should be included.
NB. QiPs cannot be counted under Domain Question 6 - Presentations
- Two QIPs (at least one presented nationally/internationally) : 6
- Two QIPs (at least one presented regionally) : 5
- Two QIPs (both presented locally) : 4
- One QIP presented nationally/internationally : 3
- One QIP (presented regionally) : 2
- One QIP (presented locally) : 1
- None : 0
Evidence that will be required:
- Evidence for this Domain must be dated between 20 November 2022 and 20 November 2025, unless you can demonstrate any period(s) of statutory leave or less than full time employment, in which case it may be extended to cover a 3-year WTE (whole time equivalent) period but must still not be dated after 20 November 2025.
- For each QIP please provide a summary (e.g. PowerPoint presentation) – including:
- QIP details
- Action plan
- Evaluations/re-audit/assessment to quantify impact of intervention, led by yourself.
- Dates QIP undertaken
- Clear evidence of where/when it was presented and the intended audience (ie. local/regional/national/international) eg. Official Conference/meeting agenda
- Please evidence your involvement in each QIP e.g. email acknowledgement of registration of QIP with Clinical Governance team or response from QIP lead and/or written signed confirmation on letter headed paper from Educational Supervisor or QiP Lead for local, regional, national or international change.
- Although QiPs cannot be counted under Domain Question 6 – Presentations, if you do not have sufficient evidence to claim a QiP or QiPs under Domain 2 – QiPs but you have QiP presentation evidence, then this can be counted in isolation under Domain 6 – Presentations instead. NB. You cannot double count any evidence.
- As this Domain has a time constraint on evidence, please ensure you have provided a copy of your employment history during the evidence upload process, if you have undertaken any periods of less than full time employment and/or statutory sickness and/or have any employment gaps that will impact on the set time period.
