Information

NHS England (North West Local Office) is coordinating the national process for recruiting trainees into all ST1 Obstetrics and Gynaecology training posts for August 2026 recruitment. This includes; England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Some summary information is included below.

Applications will be made to ST1 Obstetrics and Gynaecology posts without candidates needing to select individual local offices/Deaneries when applying.

All applicants will be required to sit the Multi- Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) once the longlisting process has been completed. Eligible applicants will be invited to book their MSRA test slot in December 2025. Additional capacity to deliver the MSRA has been secured and will be split across two windows: one in January and one in February.

It is not possible for applicants to transfer their MSRA score from previous rounds of recruitment.

All ST1 Obstetrics and Gynaecology interviews will be hosted online. Candidates will be able to preference all available posts across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Oriel during a later stage of the recruitment round should they be successful.

Applications are equally open to those who may, either from the outset or subsequently, wish to train less than full time or job share.

Please note that there is a strict application policy that applications cannot be accepted after the deadline.

For a list of indicative ST1 vacancy numbers for this round received for each region/nation please visit our website via: https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/medical-specialty-training/obstetrics-and-gynaecology/st1-obstetrics-and-gynaecology/overview-of-st1-obstetrics-and-gynaecology/posts

Please note that post numbers are subject to change throughout the recruitment round.

For information regarding salary scales please refer to the NHS Employers website as salary scales used will differ across the UK. Posts in England will be recruited to using the ‘New Terms and Conditions of Service (TCS)’ while posts in Scotland and Wales will be subject to the previous pay and conditions circular.

Before applying please read the ST1 Obstetrics & Gynaecology person specification to assess your suitability for the post.

Before you can take up a ST1 Obstetrics & Gynaecology training post, you will need to demonstrate that you are eligible to legally work in the UK. As of 2019 Obstetrics & Gynaecology training was added to the Home Office list of Shortage Occupations meaning that for applicants requiring a Tier 2 visa the Resident Labour Market does not need to be met for this specialty. This means all applicants will be eligible to apply in this round of recruitment regardless of their immigration status.

Evidence of immigration status should normally consist of a biometric residence card and date stamped passport. For further details on eligibility to work in the UK, please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website (formerly UK Border Agency) website (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration).

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the Fitness to Practise questions, please ensure that complete the Fitness to Practise Form.docx found here - https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/medical-specialty-training/fitness-to-practise - and email the completed form to our confidential email address (england.fitnesstopractise.nw@nhs.net) by no later than the closing date for applications. Answering ‘yes’ to one or more of the Fitness to Practise questions does not necessarily mean your application cannot progress.

Information is available on our website: https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/medical-specialty-training/obstetrics-and-gynaecology/st1-obstetrics-and-gynaecology

For any queries that cannot be answered by the methods above please contact: england.obsjobs.nw@nhs.net

We are expecting a high level of interest in ST1 O&G which means that it is likely that a sufficient number of appointable applicants will remain at the end of the Round 1 recruitment process.

Posts with a later start date will be offered to those applicants and any remaining posts may be filled within the same recruitment round. As a result, we may not advertise again later in the recruitment year.
