Information

We are expecting a high level of interest in Anaesthetics/ACCS Anaesthetics which means that it is likely that a sufficient number of appointable applicants will remain at the end of the Round 1 recruitment process. Posts with a later start date will be offered to those applicants and any remaining posts may be filled within the same recruitment round. As a result, we may not advertise again later in the recruitment year.

The Anaesthetics National Recruitment Office (ANRO) at NHS England - Midlands is coordinating the national process for recruiting trainees into Anaesthetics/ACCS CT1 posts in the United Kingdom.

Anaesthetists form the largest single hospital medical specialty and their skills are used in all aspects of patient care. Whilst the preoperative anaesthetic care of the surgical patient is the core of specialty work (and this includes all types of surgery from simple body surface surgery in adults to the most complex surgery in patients of all ages, including the premature new born) many anaesthetists have a much wider scope of practice which may include:

  • The preoperative preparation of surgical patients
  • The resuscitation and stabilisation of patients in the Emergency Department
  • Pain relief in labour and obstetric anaesthesia
  • Intensive care medicine
  • Transport of acutely ill and injured patients
  • Pre-hospital emergency care
  • Pain medicine including:
  • The relief of post-operative pain
  • Acute pain medicine and the management of acute teams
  • Chronic and cancer pain management
  • The provision of sedation and anaesthesia for patients undergoing various procedures outside the operating theatre. Examples of this include different endoscopic procedures, interventional radiology and dental surgery (this list is not exhaustive)

You can start your application via the Apply button.

The expected outcome of the training programme is the completion of core training.

Before applying, please read the Person Specification to assess your suitability for the post.

In the event of further training opportunities becoming available within this specialty in any of the programmes managed by the Anaesthetics National Recruitment Office, shortlisted candidates may also be considered for these posts

Please upload all required evidence of competencies to your application form when completing it online. All medical practitioners have been added to the Shortage Occupation List in the UK. This means that all medical practitioners are exempt from the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) and can apply for any specialty in any recruitment round, subject to eligibility.

It is strongly suggested that you refer to the Medical Specialty Training website to familiarise yourself with the immigration information contained within.

Online Interview dates and details can be viewed on the ANRO website.

Posts commence from Wednesday 5th August 2026.
