General Practice ST1 Competition Ratios

The competition ratio for General Practice ST1 training posts in 2024 was 3.67:1. 15,036 applications were made for 4,096 posts. This is an increase in the competition level compared to 2023 when 10,514 applications were made for 3,935 posts (a competition ratio of 2.67:1).

General Practice is often one of the least competitive of all the CT1/ST1 specialties. The high number of ST1 GP training posts means it requires a  particularly high number of applications for it to become more competitive. General Practice was the least competitive specialty in 2015 (1.42:1), 2016 (1.28:1), 2020 (1.5:1), 2021 (1.79:1) and 2022 (2.07:1). In 2024 the new General Practice and Public Health Medicine (Dual CCT Programme) was the most competitive CT1/ST1 specialty with a competition ratio of 112.13:1.

This data has been taken from the reports available on NHS England’s Medical Specialty Training website (https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/). Data is presented here in a single table to make it easier to sort, filter and make comparisons across specialties, etc. The published data may not include posts in Scotland or Northern Ireland if they manage their own recruitment rather than recruiting via the national recruitment process across the whole of the UK.
