Specialty Training Fill Rates - Scotland

In 2024 94.38% of the 1,068 posts available in Scotland were filled. This is a slight increase in the fill rate compared to 2023 when 93.72% of 1,083 posts were filled.

At CT1/ST1 level 99.46% of 746 posts were filled (742 filled posts, 4 unfilled post). This is an increase compared to 2023 when 98.65% of 740 CT1/ST1 posts were filled (730 filled posts, 10 unfilled posts). 14 out of 17 CT1/ST1 specialties (82.35%) filled all their posts, with 3 specialties – General Practice, Broad Based Training,  having unfilled posts (a decrease compared to 2023 when 13 out of 15 specialties (86.67%) filled all their posts).

At ST3 level 81.21% of 149 posts were filled (121 filled posts, 23 unfilled posts). This is a decrease compared to 2023 when 83.7% of 135 ST3 posts were filled (113 filled posts, 22 unfilled posts). 17 out of 26 ST3 specialties (65.38%) filled all their posts, with 9 specialties having unfilled posts – Haematology, Intensive Care Medicine, Diagnostic Neuropathology, Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology, Medical Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (an increase compared to 2023 when 14 out of 23 specialties (60.87%) filled all their posts).

At ST4 level 83.82% of 173 posts were filled (145 filled posts, 28 unfilled posts). This is an increase compared to 2023 when 82.69% of 208 ST4 posts were filled (172 filled posts, 36 unfilled posts). 11 out of 22 ST4 specialties (50%) filled all their posts, with 11 specialties having unfilled posts – Renal Medicine, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Genitourinary Medicine, General Psychiatry, Acute Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Paediatric Cardiology, Forensic Psychiatry, Old Age Psychiatry, Psychiatry of Learning Disability  (a slight decrease compared to 2023 when 13 out of 23 specialties (56.52%) filled all their posts).
